For many many years, the conflict between the Native
Americans and American sports teams and product producers has been a big deal.
Native Americans find it offensive to associate their name with almost
anything. Now this is not true for all Native Americans, some find it as an
honor that people would use their culture and race as a way to get people to
buy their products. Many of these products that there are controversies over
are cars, such as the jeep Grand Cherokee. Another product that there are disputes
over are foods and drinks, for example Crazy Horse Malt Liquor. Also Many
Native Americans find it offensive when people design a clothing line based off
of them, such as Urban Outfitters has done with their Navajo line.
The
Jeep Grand Cherokee is an suv that has been in America for decades. It has
always been known as a rugged, off road capable car. While this car is very
popular among Americans it is not as popular with the Native Americans. They
find it offensive that people would use their Indian name and name a car after
it. Indians are known for being very resourceful and tough themselves, they
could move their tribes all over the place and tough it out in any kind of
condition. I believe that this is what jeep was going for when they decided to
name the nicest SUV. I believe it should be taken as a complement but the
Native Americans take offence to it. I also see where the Native Americans are
coming from with the way they have reacted to the naming of the Jeep Grand
Cherokee. You would never see a car manufacturer going and coming up with a
name for their tough SUV and naming it The Great African American. That would be taken very offensively throughout
the nation and there is no way that the car would ever be produced.
Another
thing that has caused an uproar in Native American communities is the way that
tobacco and alchahol companies name
their products after Native Americans. Examples of this are Crazy Horse Malt
Liquor and Chewing tobacco named after native Americans. This has not been
taken lightly among the Native American communities. I can Understand this
because it is almost like they are taking the Native American race and using
them as a way to get people to buy their alchohal. Its like these companies
think because they put an Indian on their bottle or bag that people will want
to buy it. No alchohal company would put an important person in the History of
African Americans such as Martin Luther King on their bottle because that would
cause a huge uproar. It would never even get to the point of production of the
product because somebody would stop it because it would offend many People.
Clothing
of Native Americans is very recognizable, it was a certain style that everyone
can spot. The Clothing Company of Urban Outfitters Opened up a Navajo line. In
this line of clothing of theirs everything is molded after their interpretation of the
Navajo Indians. This has just recently been a problem because native Americans don’t
like the fact that people would try to model clothes after them, especially in
the way that they were doing this because the clothes didn’t actually look like
Indian clothes. There are two sides to this argument. Many people find it to be
very flattering that Americans would try to duplicate a style of clothing that
is so specific to the Indians. On the other hand Many Indians find it to be an
insult.
This will
always be a conflict because People are not worried about upsetting the Indians
as long as slapping a picture on the side of a bottle will get people to buy
their drinks or their clothes. You would not find Americans using any other
race as a product emblem. This is because The Indians opinions is something
that has never been taken very seriously. Just like when America was colonized Indians
were just kicked off of their land their opinion was not taken into
consideration. Until this conflict is
largely addressed people will continue to offend the Native Americans in this
same way.
